Microsoft Pushes OneDrive with Full-Screen Ad in Windows 11

Windows 11 has once again been updated with another advertisement, or ‘recommendation’ as Microsoft prefers to call them. This time, the focus is on OneDrive, the company’s cloud storage service. The new ad takes the form of a full-screen pop-up that appears after installing recent Windows 11 updates.

The ad mimics the look of an initial setup screen, promoting the benefits of having a backup, which is not a bad thing in itself. However, the full-screen takeover and the emphasis on OneDrive’s features can be quite off-putting. Users are presented with two options: ‘Skip for now,’ which will likely lead to the ad reappearing later, or ‘Next,’ which takes them through the setup process using the Windows Backup app.

While the Windows Backup app is considered a good solution, the constant barrage of prompts and suggestions to use specific Microsoft services within Windows 11 has become increasingly frustrating. It seems like a new ad or ‘recommendation’ pops up almost weekly, whether in the official release or preview versions.

Adding to the annoyance, OneDrive’s free storage is limited to 5GB, meaning users will need to upgrade to a paid subscription to secure enough space for their backup needs. This further reinforces the feeling that Microsoft is aggressively pushing users towards its paid services.
