In a surprising move that defies popular sentiment, Microsoft is introducing Start menu advertisements to all Windows 11 users. This decision comes after a brief testing period earlier this month, indicating that Microsoft believes the potential benefits outweigh the negative user feedback.
The advertisements are displayed in the Recommended section of the Start menu, promoting curated app recommendations from the Microsoft Store. Microsoft claims that these apps are selected from a small group of trusted developers.
The ads are part of the optional KB5036980 update, which is rolling out to all Windows 11 22H2 and 23H2 users. As it’s a preview of the May Patch Tuesday update, it will eventually reach all users.
Microsoft claims that these advertisements will assist users in discovering new apps and games available on the store. However, it’s worth noting that not all Windows features tested on Insider Channels make it into the final version, especially if they face significant user resistance.
Despite user disapproval, Microsoft is determined to promote app development for its store through these advertisements. Notably, the ads can be easily disabled by navigating to Settings > Personalization > Start and disabling the toggle for ‘Show recommendations for tips, app promotions, and more.’
While the update includes some useful additions, such as enhanced Start menu recommendations and improved Widgets performance, it remains to be seen whether these improvements will overshadow the irritation caused by the Start menu advertisements.
