In the fourth quarter of the 2024 College Football Playoff National Championship, with just under five minutes remaining and Michigan leading by 14 points, Washington’s quarterback launched a Hail Mary pass. But the ball was intercepted by Michigan cornerback Mike Sainristil, securing a national championship victory for the Wolverines.
Sainristil’s path to the NFL Draft was not an easy one. Initially committed to Virginia Tech, he flipped his pledge to Michigan after feeling the connection with the coaching staff and players. After initially playing wide receiver, Sainristil transitioned to defense and made an immediate impact in 2022, starting every game and making key plays in both coverage and as a pass-rusher.
In 2023, Sainristil emerged as a leader and one of the top cornerbacks in the country, recording six interceptions and six pass breakups. His highest-graded game came in the Big Ten title game against Iowa, where he had one pass breakup, three pressures, and one sack.
Sainristil’s impressive performances led to him being ranked No. 34 in PFF’s final top-320 rankings for the 2024 NFL Draft. He is now set to join a long line of Michigan players who have gone on to successful NFL careers.
Despite his small size, Sainristil is a fearless player with a high football IQ and a passion for the game. He models his game after players like Mike Hilton, Kenny Moore II, and Taron Johnson, and believes he can compete with the best in the NFL.
