Milan has taken a major step towards a greener and more efficient transportation system with the grand opening of its fully operational M4 metro line. The new line, stretching all the way to the San Cristoforo terminus, adds a crucial link to the city’s transportation network, connecting the heart of Milan to the San Cristoforo railway hub. This significant addition to Milan’s infrastructure goes beyond simply providing a new route; it marks a commitment to sustainable urban development.
The M4 line stands as a testament to modern innovation. Engineered by Hitachi Rail, it features 47 state-of-the-art autonomous trains, capable of reaching speeds up to 80 km/h. The trains themselves are not the only marvel; the line also boasts advanced technology including signaling, power supply systems, telecommunications, platform screen doors, and a SCADA system for management and data acquisition. The implementation of the ATC signaling system, utilizing driverless CBTC technology, further enhances operational reliability and passenger safety.
The impact of the M4 line extends far beyond the realm of transportation. Its 15-kilometer length, encompassing 21 stations, significantly increases Milan’s overall transport capacity. With a base frequency of 90 seconds between trains, reducing to 75 seconds during peak times, and a passenger capacity of 500 per train, the M4 line is projected to handle approximately 24,000 commuters per hour in each direction.
This impressive new addition to Milan’s transport system is poised to dramatically reduce reliance on private vehicles. Estimates suggest the M4 line will replace over 4 million annual car trips, leading to a significant decrease in air and noise pollution. The environmental benefits are substantial, with predictions indicating an annual reduction of 10,310 tons of CO2 emissions and 1,511 kg of particulate matter (PM10) emissions.
Luca D’Aquila, COO of Hitachi Rail Group and CEO of Hitachi Rail Italy, emphasizes the importance of this development in shifting towards collective mobility. He states, “The completion of Line 4 represents another step forward for the citizens of Milan in the process of transitioning from private to collective mobility. The inauguration of the final section to San Cristoforo will have a significant environmental impact, with over 4 million fewer car trips each year. This is an achievable target, according to estimates, thanks to the comfort and reliability of our vehicles, and safety of our signalling systems, which will enable citizens to travel safely.”
The M4 metro line is more than just a new transportation route; it is a beacon of progress, signifying Milan’s dedication to a sustainable future. This project is a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to improving the quality of life for Milan’s residents.
