Millions More to Benefit from Superfast Broadband Boost
Millions of homes and businesses across the UK are set to experience a significant broadband speed boost over the coming months, thanks to the expansion of Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) connections. This upgrade will replace aging copper lines that currently limit speeds to around 70Mbps, providing a significant improvement in connectivity.
Over 500 new locations will be connected to Openreach’s ultrafast network, bringing the total number of homes and businesses with access to gigabit-capable technology to 2.7 million. This means that residents in Tobermory, Haworth, Saundersfoot, Pinxton, Harlow, Southampton, and Roborough, among other areas, will soon be able to enjoy lightning-fast internet speeds.
FTTP connections can deliver speeds in excess of 1Gbps, which is over 10 times faster than the current UK average. This upgrade will enable users to download a full HD movie in just 40 seconds, making it easier to stream high-quality content, play online games, and conduct video calls without interruptions.
To help people find out when they will be hooked up to improved downloads, Openreach has refreshed its online map and postcode checker. This tool provides a clear and regularly updated view of the company’s plans and progress between now and 2026.
By the end of 2026, Openreach aims to provide 25 million homes and businesses with access to gigabit-capable technology. This ambitious goal is part of the company’s commitment to building a world-class digital infrastructure across the UK, connecting both urban and rural communities to the benefits of superfast broadband.
