Minnesota Democratic Senator Arrested for Alleged Burglary
A Democratic state senator in Minnesota has been arrested for allegedly committing a burglary. According to online jail records, 49-year-old Sen. Nicole Mitchell was booked into the Becker County Jail on Monday for a suspected first-degree burglary offense.
The incident began around 4:45 a.m. when a homeowner on the 700 block of Granger Road in Detroit Lakes reported an active burglary to 911. Detroit Lakes Police Chief Steve Todd stated that officers responding to the call found and arrested Mitchell inside the home.
Details surrounding the arrest are limited as the investigation remains ongoing. The Becker County Attorney is currently weighing potential formal charges against Mitchell.
Mitchell, a resident of Woodbury, has represented District 47 since her election to the state Senate in 2022. Before her political career, she worked as a meteorologist for KSTP-TV and Minnesota Public Radio. Mitchell also serves as a lieutenant colonel in the Air National Guard.
The Senate Democratic Caucus has issued a statement acknowledging the situation but declined to comment further pending more information.
Republican Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson expressed shock over Mitchell’s arrest. He emphasized the high standard of conduct expected from legislators and called for consequences in both the court of law and within the legislature.
Mitchell’s arrest could potentially impact Democrats, who currently hold a slim one-seat majority in the Senate with only four weeks remaining in the legislative session.
