Senator Arrested for Alleged Burglary

A Minnesota senator, Nicole Mitchell, has been arrested for her alleged involvement in a burglary that occurred early Monday morning. Mitchell, a Democrat representing Woodbury, Minnesota, was booked into the Becker County Jail following the incident.

The Detroit Lakes Police Department responded to a call around 4:45 am after a robbery was reported at a residence. Upon arrival, police found Mitchell inside the home and identified her as the suspect.

According to Detroit Lakes Police Chief Steve Todd, Mitchell remains in jail as of Monday afternoon, and the department has forwarded its findings to the Becker County Attorney. It is unclear at this time whether formal charges have been filed against her.

Property tax records indicate that Mitchell’s stepmother and late father previously resided at the home where she was found. Mitchell, a former meteorologist and Air Force veteran, was elected to her first term in 2022 and serves as vice chair of the State and Local Government and Veterans Committee.

A spokesperson for the Minnesota Senate DFL Caucus has acknowledged the situation but declined to comment pending further information.

Less than a week before her arrest, Mitchell attended an event at the Minnesota Capitol advocating for safer communities and gun control measures. She has been actively involved with organizations promoting gun ownership limits and mental health services to address gun violence.

GOP Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson expressed shock upon hearing about Mitchell’s arrest. He emphasized the high standard of conduct expected from legislators and anticipates appropriate consequences based on the outcome of both legal proceedings and legislative actions.
