Miuccia Prada’s Miu Miu: A Celebration of Women’s Stories Through Art and Film

Miuccia Prada, a name synonymous with talent, dedication, and forward-thinking, has transcended the realm of fashion. A renowned designer, a staunch feminist, and an ardent art lover, Prada excels in elevating concepts of female solidarity and connection. This is exemplified by her MIU MIU project, ‘Women’s Tales,’ launched in 2011. This initiative showcases short films by internationally acclaimed female directors, exploring the multifaceted nature of ‘femininity in the 21st century.’ In late August, the 28th installment of the project, ‘El Afere Miu Miu’ (2024), directed by Laura Citarella, premiered at the Venice International Film Festival. Since 2021, Miu Miu has further evolved its runway presentations by incorporating installations and motion images created by young female artists, transforming the runway into a space for dialogue and expression. This year, under Miuccia’s leadership, Miu Miu has partnered with Art Basel Paris’s public program to present a special exhibition, ‘Tales & Tellers.’ This large-scale event, taking place at the Palais d’Iéna in Paris – the headquarters of the French Economic, Social, and Environmental Council and the venue where Miu Miu collections are unveiled each season – will feature videos, installations, and talk sessions by female filmmakers. The exhibition is curated by Elvira Dyangani Ose, director of the Museum of Contemporary Art Barcelona, and Goschka Macuga, a contemporary artist whose work for the Spring/Summer 2025 show garnered significant attention. The participating artists include Agnès Varda, Zoé Cassavetes, Ava DuVernay, Mati Diop, and Chloe Sevigny. ‘Tales & Tellers’ is a powerful testament to the numerous narratives that have shaped the Miu Miu aesthetic. In reflecting on the project, Miuccia Prada shared, “I have wanted to create an exhibition about women’s issues for many years. But there are countless groups, perspectives, thoughts, religions, theories, and civilizations. What is truly difficult today, in fashion as well as in politics, is grasping this immensity. It is nearly impossible to decipher the world today. However, this project, which aims to capture this world, stems from my passion for film. Film has shaped my culture, so I wanted to engage with it as soon as possible. With the ‘Women’s Tales’ project, I built a platform for talented female directors and started a conversation about femininity, vanity, and what they mean today through their perspective.” You can learn more about the event and register for talk sessions and guided tours on Miumiu.com.
