Addressing the 19th East Asia Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the urgent need for peace and stability in Eurasia and West Asia, acknowledging the profound negative impact of conflicts in these regions on the Global South. He emphasized that lasting solutions cannot be found on the battlefield and urged for a return to diplomacy and dialogue.
Modi asserted that a free, open, inclusive, prosperous, and rule-based Indo-Pacific is crucial for the peace and progress of the entire region. He highlighted the importance of a peaceful and stable South China Sea, advocating for maritime activities conducted under the UN Convention on the Law of the Seas (UNCLOS) and ensuring freedom of navigation and airspace. He stressed the need for a strong and effective Code of Conduct that does not restrict the foreign policies of regional nations.
“Our approach should be one of developmentalism and not expansionism,” Modi declared. He further emphasized the importance of respecting sovereignty, territorial integrity, and international laws, advocating for a humanitarian approach prioritizing dialogue and diplomacy.
Modi reiterated India’s commitment to peace, stating that the country, rooted in the principles of Buddha’s teachings, believes that this is not an era for war. He highlighted India’s role as a ‘Vishwabandhu,’ meaning ‘friend to the world,’ and pledged continued support for peace initiatives.
In the context of the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Russia, and the Israel-Hamas war, Modi highlighted the urgent need for a resolution. “Terrorism is also a serious challenge to global peace and security. To face it, forces believing in humanity will have to work together,” he added.
Addressing the humanitarian crisis caused by Typhoon Yagi, which ravaged Southeast Asia and South China in September, Modi expressed his deepest condolences to the affected populations and highlighted India’s humanitarian assistance through Operation Sadbhav.
Modi also reaffirmed India’s unwavering support for ASEAN unity and centrality, recognizing its crucial role in India’s Indo-Pacific vision and Quad cooperation. He emphasized the shared objectives between India’s ‘Indo-Pacific Oceans’ Initiative’ and ‘ASEAN Outlook on Indo-Pacific,’ underscoring the alignment in their visions.
Addressing the situation in Myanmar, Modi reiterated India’s support for the ASEAN Five-point Consensus and the need for humanitarian assistance while advocating for appropriate steps to restore democracy. “We believe that, for this, Myanmar should be engaged, not isolated,” he said.
Concluding his address, Modi highlighted the East Asia Summit’s significance as a cornerstone of India’s Act East Policy, signifying India’s commitment to regional engagement and collaboration.
