The much-anticipated first phase of Jammu and Kashmir’s Assembly elections kicked off on September 18, 2024, drawing calls for a strong voter turnout from prominent political figures. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, using the social media platform X, urged voters to come out in large numbers and “strengthen the festival of democracy.” He specifically encouraged young and first-time voters to exercise their franchise.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also took to X, highlighting the significance of these elections, particularly in the context of the changes made to Jammu and Kashmir’s status in 2019. “For the first time in the history of the country, the statehood of a state has been taken away and it has been made a union territory – this is a violation of the constitutional rights of all of you, it is an insult to Jammu and Kashmir,” Gandhi stated. He appealed to voters to support the INDIA alliance, asserting that it would “restore your rights – will bring employment opportunities – It will make women stronger – Will bring you out of the ‘Injustice Era’ …will make Jammu and Kashmir prosperous again.”
Adding to the buzz surrounding the elections, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference vice president, Omar Abdullah, expressed optimism about his party’s chances. He emphasized the significance of the new Assembly, stating, “After October 8, the Lieutenant Governor won’t be having powers to frame laws on his own as a new Assembly, which will be more powerful than him, will be in place. We are hopeful that we will win. We have been waiting for this day for 10 years.”
The first phase of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections marks a significant moment in the region’s political landscape after a decade-long hiatus. With prominent leaders urging a high voter turnout and outlining their visions for the future of the region, the elections promise to be a pivotal event in Jammu and Kashmir’s political journey.
