Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a three-day visit to the United States, where he will participate in a series of high-profile events, including the Quad Summit, the UN General Assembly’s ‘Summit of the Future’, and bilateral meetings with US President Joe Biden.
Ahead of his trip, Modi emphasized the significance of the Quad, a grouping of India, Australia, Japan, and the United States, as a force for peace, progress, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. He expressed his anticipation for the Quad Summit, hosted by President Biden in Wilmington, Delaware, stating, “I look forward joining my colleagues President (Joe) Biden, Prime Minister (Anthony) Albanese and Prime Minister (Fumio) Kishida for the Quad Summit. The forum has emerged as a key group of the like-minded countries to work for peace, progress and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.”
The Quad Summit will take place on the first day of Modi’s US visit and will be followed by his address at the UN General Assembly’s ‘Summit of the Future’ in New York. This summit, described by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres as a ‘once in a generation UN Summit’, marks a significant milestone as the UN approaches its 80th anniversary in 2025. Modi highlighted the importance of the summit in shaping the future of humanity, stating, “The Summit of the Future is an opportunity for the global community to chart the road ahead for the betterment of humanity. I will share views of the one sixth of the humanity as their stakes in a peaceful and secure future are among the highest in the world.”
In addition to these high-level engagements, Modi’s itinerary includes meetings with the Indian diaspora and American business leaders. He expressed his enthusiasm for these interactions, recognizing their crucial role in fostering the vibrant partnership between India and the United States. “I am eagerly looking forward to engaging with the Indian diaspora and important American business leaders, who are the key stakeholders and provide vibrancy to the unique partnership between the largest and the oldest democracies of the world,” Modi said in a statement.
Modi’s visit to the US comes at a crucial time, with the US Presidential Elections scheduled for November. The timing also coincides with India’s planned hosting of the Quad Leaders’ Summit in 2025. The Prime Minister’s meetings with President Biden are expected to focus on further strengthening the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, exploring new avenues for collaboration, and addressing issues of mutual concern.
