Mohun Bagan Captain Warns East Bengal: Derby is a Different Ball Game

The upcoming Kolkata Derby between Mohun Bagan Super Giant and East Bengal on October 19th promises to be a captivating clash, even if on paper, it may appear as a David vs. Goliath matchup. However, Mohun Bagan captain Subhasish Bose has made it clear that the Mariners are not underestimating their opponents, despite East Bengal’s current struggles.

“Yes, East Bengal has lost six matches. But that does not matter because derby is a different ball game,” Bose stated to reporters. East Bengal’s season has been marred by inconsistent performances, with several high-profile additions during the summer transfer window failing to translate into positive results. They were eliminated from the Durand Cup by second-division side Shillong Lajong in the quarterfinal and suffered a 2-3 loss to Altyn Asyr in the AFC Champions League 2 qualifier. The team currently sits at the bottom of the Indian Super League (ISL) table, with four losses in their first four matches. Their poor form led to the departure of coach Carles Cuadrat last month, who was replaced by Oscar Burzon.

“A team can lose all its matches in a season but it comes into a derby with a different (level of) vigour. Moreover, a team which has lost so many matches will be more desperate to get back in form with a win here,” Bose added, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the derby.

In contrast, Mohun Bagan is coming off a dominant 3-0 victory over Mohammedan Sporting in their previous match, with Bose playing a crucial role in two of the goals. “The (0-3) loss to Bengaluru gave us more motivation to jump back and our boys gave their all for the three points,” Bose said. “For us, the goal is clear – to keep winning games to remain on top of the table. And we will do everything possible to keep working towards that.”

Mohun Bagan will also be boosted by the return of key midfielder Sahal Abdul Samad to the squad. Samad had to be substituted 10 minutes after coming on as a substitute against Bengaluru FC, with what appeared to be a right hamstring strain. He missed the match against Mohammedan Sporting and the recent international friendly against Vietnam, where India drew 1-1. However, the 27-year-old has been training with the first team and is expected to be available for selection, potentially competing with Anirudh Thapa for the No. 10 position.

The Kolkata Derby promises to be a thrilling encounter with both teams seeking a crucial victory for different reasons. East Bengal will be looking to turn their season around, while Mohun Bagan aims to maintain their winning momentum and solidify their position at the top of the ISL table.
