Mohun Bagan Super Giant’s AFC Champions League Two journey began with a frustrating goalless draw against FC Ravshan Kulob of Tajikistan at the Salt Lake Stadium on Wednesday. The match saw the Indian side struggle to break down a resolute Ravshan defense, despite creating several late opportunities.
The first half was a rather subdued affair, with both teams showing a lack of attacking intent. Mohun Bagan, under coach Jose Molina, opted to field a side predominantly made up of bench players, taking advantage of the tournament regulations that allow for an unlimited number of foreign players. The strategy saw three of their imports feature, while many of their starting players from the Indian Super League opener against Mumbai City FC were rested.
Mohun Bagan’s first real chance came in the 19th minute when Dimitri Petratos found himself unmarked in the Ravshan box, set up by Manvir Singh. However, the Australian forward hesitated with his shot, allowing the opposing defense to recover and block his attempt.
Ravshan nearly took advantage of Mohun Bagan’s defensive hesitation in the 27th minute, but goalkeeper Vishal Kaith made a crucial save to deny Muhammadjon Rahimov from close range. The second half saw a similar pattern, with the action largely confined to midfield and few clear-cut chances in the final third.
The final 15 minutes saw a change in momentum as Molina introduced his first-team players, hoping to spark a late attack. However, despite several promising moments, Mohun Bagan failed to capitalize. Liston Colaco, Dimitri Petratos, and Jason Cummings all missed golden opportunities to score against the Ravshan goalkeeper, Yevhen Hrytsenko.
The final whistle brought an end to a disappointing night for Mohun Bagan, who will be looking to improve their performance in the upcoming matches of the group stage.
