The match was a rollercoaster of emotions, with both teams trading blows and showcasing their attacking prowess.
The visitors, NorthEast United, struck first in the fourth minute when Mohammed Ali Bemammer unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box, finding the back of the net with a precise strike into the bottom left corner. However, Mohun Bagan responded swiftly, equalizing in the tenth minute through a well-taken header from 21-year-old Dippendu Biswas. The young defender met a perfectly placed freekick from Dimitri Petratos, sending the ball past the helpless NorthEast keeper.
NorthEast United regained the lead in the 24th minute, thanks to a brilliant counter-attacking move orchestrated by Jithin M.S. Alaeddine Ajaraie finished off the move with a clinical strike, putting his team back in the driver’s seat. But Mohun Bagan were not to be denied. Captain Subhasish Bose found the back of the net in the 38th minute, capitalizing on a goalkeeping blunder by Gurmeet Singh. The NorthEast custodian failed to hold onto a header, leaving Bose with an easy tap-in from close range.
The second half saw both sides fight tooth and nail, but it was Mohun Bagan who emerged victorious. Substitute Jason Cummings proved to be the hero, scoring the winning goal in the 87th minute. Cummings, who had only come on a few minutes earlier, showed impressive composure inside the box, smashing the ball into the net after receiving a clever pass from Sahal Abdul Samad.
This victory sees Mohun Bagan Super Giant move up the Indian Super League table, while NorthEast United will be disappointed to have dropped points after a promising start.
