Mohun Bagan’s new head coach, Jose Molina, is ready to step into the big shoes left by Antonio Lopez Habas, the mastermind behind the team’s ISL Shield win last season. The Mariners will kick off their new ISL campaign on September 13th with a challenging match against Mumbai FC.
Despite the pressure of following a successful season, Molina remains focused on the future. “Pressure is not a problem for me. Last season was great, but it’s past. We are not going to win matches thinking about that. We have to beat our opponents in the 90 minutes. I’m working for the future,” he stated.
Molina has outlined a clear strategy for the season, emphasizing a uniform game plan for all competitions, including the prestigious AFC Champions League Two. This approach reflects a desire for consistency and a focus on adapting to various opponents and scenarios. “It’s not different plans for different competitions. We are going to prepare in the best way and try to win, no matter who we play, where we play, or which competition it is,” Molina explained.
The team is also looking forward to the potential return of midfielder Ashique Kuruniyan, who missed last season due to a career-threatening ACL injury. Kuruniyan, known for his impactful performances, is now back in training and eager to make a comeback. “I’ve started training and it’s good now. I’m really excited to make a comeback after I completely missed the last season. It’s always difficult when you get injured, but it’s about staying positive, some good days will come. I was waiting for my time,” he shared.
While the team is optimistic about the upcoming season, they’re also aware of the lessons learned from their recent Durand Cup final loss to NorthEast United FC. “We are not happy, it’s a lesson for all of us. That’s football, we can’t be thinking in the past we have to look forward,” Molina acknowledged.
The upcoming ISL season promises a thrilling ride for Mohun Bagan, with a new coach, a determined team, and the return of a key player. As they aim to continue their winning streak, the spotlight will be on Molina’s ability to lead the Mariners through the challenges ahead and maintain their position as a formidable force in Indian football.
