Moncton Resident Celebrates 104th Birthday with an Outpouring of Cards

Lawrence Stiles, a resident of Moncton, recently celebrated his remarkable 104th birthday, an occasion made even more special by the outpouring of birthday cards he received from the community. Despite not having a specific secret to his longevity, Stiles advises younger generations to “stay out of trouble.” Previous birthday celebrations were subdued due to the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting his family to request 104 birthday cards from the public to commemorate this special occasion. In a heartwarming response, Stiles received a remarkable 160 cards from near and far, including messages from elementary school students and community members. Expressing his gratitude, Stiles acknowledged the “wonderful” gesture, though he noted that reading through the cards may take some time. His family and friends remain hopeful that he will continue to enjoy good health and be surrounded by love in the years to come. Growing up in the village of Petitcodiac, N.B., Stiles witnessed the Great Depression firsthand, instilling in him a sense of thrift. Reflecting on the cost of the cards he received, he remarked, “I don’t know how much a card is… but it’s over a dollar a piece.” As for his next birthday, Stiles said he hasn’t planned that far ahead, quipping with a smile, “I don’t expect to be around!”
