The onset of Monsoon 2024 in Kerala is highly anticipated as it will provide much-needed relief from the scorching heat conditions that have been prevalent in most parts of India. Intense heatwave conditions have been experienced in several regions due to a combination of anticyclonic conditions and the El Niño effect.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the Southwest Monsoon is likely to reach Kerala on May 31st, with a possible variation of four days due to statistical model error. The weather department utilizes various indicators to predict the monsoon’s onset, such as wind patterns, rainfall, and radiation levels.
This year marks the third consecutive year where heatwaves have occurred during the early summer months, attributed to the effects of climate change. Exposure to heatwaves has extended for 10 to 20 days in some areas, significantly longer than the usual 4 to 8 days. Several regions in eastern India have experienced record-breaking numbers of heatwave days.
