The arrival of the monsoon in northwest India is expected by June 27-30, according to an India Meteorological Department (IMD) scientist. This timeframe aligns with the typical monsoon arrival dates for the region, which includes Haryana, Punjab, Delhi Chandigarh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and parts of Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh.
The IMD scientist, Soma Sen, informed news agency ANI that a western disturbance is anticipated over Bihar and Jharkhand from June 18th or 19th. This disturbance, combined with south-westerly winds from the Arabian Sea, is likely to bring moisture and associated relief to Punjab and Haryana starting on the same date.
Additionally, the IMD has forecasted extremely heavy rainfall in the next 3-5 days, primarily impacting the Northeast region, particularly Meghalaya, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Manipur. The weather agency has issued warnings for isolated extremely heavy rainfall in Assam and Meghalaya and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal until June 19th, with Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya anticipated to receive exceptionally heavy rainfall. Isolated heavy rainfall is also predicted for Odisha on June 20-21.
Over the next 5 days, Gujarat, Konkan, Goa, Maharashtra, and Marathwada are expected to experience light to moderate rainfall. Isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorm, lightning, and gusty winds (40-60 kmph) is predicted for Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh during the same period.
Regarding heatwave conditions, Sen highlighted that North India is likely to experience a heatwave, with a red alert issued for Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi. Severe heatwave conditions are expected to continue in Bihar and Jharkhand on June 18th.
Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are forecasted for most parts of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, and Bihar until June 18th. The weather agency expects heatwave conditions in Jammu-Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh until June 19th, and in Rajasthan until June 19th. The IMD anticipates the heatwave to subside after this period.
