The Southwest monsoon has started its retreat from Gujarat and Rajasthan, marking the beginning of the transition to drier conditions. However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast significant rainfall in several parts of the country, particularly in western India.
Mumbai and other districts of Maharashtra, along with coastal Karnataka and Goa, are expected to experience heavy rainfall. The IMD has issued a red alert for Tuesday for certain districts in coastal Karnataka and Goa, indicating a high likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall. An orange alert has also been issued for the Marathawada region, central Maharashtra, and north interior Karnataka, indicating the potential for heavy to very heavy rainfall.
Looking ahead, the IMD predicts heavy downpours for today in Konkan and Goa, Coastal Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Odisha. The agency anticipates extremely heavy falls exceeding 20 centimeters in isolated places over Konkan and Goa, and Coastal Karnataka. Heavy to very heavy rainfall, exceeding 12 centimeters, is likely at isolated places over Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, and North Interior Karnataka.
Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds are expected in isolated locations across Kerala and Mahe, Uttar Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar, West Bengal and Sikkim, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry.
While much of the country braces for rain, sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are expected to experience hot and humid weather. The IMD has also issued a squally weather warning for the coasts of Kerala, Karnataka, Konkan, Goa, and Maharashtra, with wind speeds reaching 35 to 45 kilometers per hour, gusting up to 55 kilometers per hour.
As the monsoon transitions, the weather patterns across India are expected to evolve significantly. The IMD continues to monitor the situation closely and provide updates to keep the public informed.
