Montana Renewables Delivers First Shipment of Sustainable Aviation Fuel to Detroit Metropolitan Airport
In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable air travel, Montana Renewables, LLC (MRL), the largest Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) producer in North America, has delivered its inaugural shipment of 7,000 gallons of SAF to Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW). This marks the first time that DTW will have access to this eco-friendly fuel option.
The SAF was transported to Dearborn, Michigan’s Buckeye Pipeline facility before being delivered to the airport via pipeline. MRL, known for its commitment to renewable energy solutions, produced and blended the SAF using camelina oil, a non-food renewable source that offers additional cash crop potential for farmers.
“Supplying the SAF to DTW marks another significant milestone in the decarbonization of air travel,” stated Bruce Fleming, CEO of MRL. “Not only does it bring SAF to Detroit flights, but we are especially pleased to pioneer camelina oil as a non-food renewable that provides additional cash crop potential for farmers.”
The use of SAF is a major step forward in reducing the aviation industry’s carbon footprint. This drop-in fuel is compatible with existing aviation fueling infrastructure and aircraft engine technology, making the transition to sustainable aviation fuels more seamless.
