Nestled in the Sulu archipelago, Mindanao is home to the Bangsamoro people, also known as the Moro, who have a deep connection to the sea and a rich cultural heritage. DJ Medmessiah, the founder of Morobeats, embodies this spirit, drawing inspiration from his Tausug roots and diverse upbringing. Starting as a breakdancer, he immersed himself in the art of DJing and rapping, honing his skills in Zamboanga City and eventually in Manila’s vibrant hip-hop scene.
Medmessiah’s passion for storytelling through music led him to establish Morobeats in 2014. The label’s roster of talented Filipino artists, including Tha Wizard, Dizzy D of H20 Klann, Prophecee, Malik, Teemo, Naus, JMara, and Medmessiah’s daughters, Fateeha and Miss A, showcases the diversity and authenticity of Mindanaoan hip-hop. Morobeats’ approach is refreshingly raw, with Medmessiah often livestreaming his beatmaking sessions and collaborating with local musicians to produce songs and music videos within a single day.
Hip-hop, with its emphasis on authenticity and resilience, resonates deeply with the Mindanaoan experience. Medmessiah believes that the industry is becoming more inclusive, allowing artists from marginalized regions like Mindanao to gain recognition. However, he challenges the focus on virality and algorithms, advocating for the creation of music that stems from genuine emotions and cultural experiences.
Morobeats’ music incorporates traditional elements, such as the Maguindanaoan kulintang, a kettle gong and drum ensemble. Medmessiah sees this blending of contemporary and indigenous sounds as crucial for creating a distinct identity. He believes that the air in Mindanao has a unique effect on the people’s mindset, fostering a connection to nature and a rich musicality.
Storytelling has always been an integral part of Moro culture, with traditions like the Tausug kisa (spoken word poetry) and the Maguindanaoan dayunday (freestyle exchange of verses) influencing the development of hip-hop in the region. Morobeats’ music carries forward this legacy, using rap as a powerful medium to share stories, challenge stereotypes, and promote understanding.
Ultimately, Medmessiah’s goal with Morobeats is to foster peace and unity through cultural expression. He believes that genuine representation and collaboration can bridge divides and empower individuals. Morobeats’ music embodies this spirit of collectivism and community, where the success of each member strengthens the group as a whole. Medmessiah’s unwavering commitment to uplifting Mindanaoan voices and preserving cultural heritage ensures that Morobeats will continue to be a beacon of authenticity and inspiration for years to come.
