Morocco’s Caftan Week Returns to Celebrate the Iconic Garment’s Heritage

Morocco, a renowned hub of the arts, is celebrated for its unique craftsmanship and fashion, particularly its traditional kaftan. The kaftan, a flowing robe, has been an integral part of Moroccan fashion for centuries and is widely recognized for its exquisite beauty.

On June 5, 2022, the Moroccan kaftan was officially recognized as intangible cultural heritage by the Islamic World Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO). The garment’s origins can be traced back to the 15th century in Morocco, influenced by the Moorish history of the region and the introduction of the kaftan by the Ottomans.

The annual Caftan Week, now in its 24th edition, will be held from May 9-12 in Marrakech under the theme “Morocco, Land of the Caftan.” The event will showcase the garment’s history, its evolution, and the latest designs from renowned Moroccan kaftan designers.

Participants will have the opportunity to experience and learn about the intricate craftsmanship of the caftan, as well as participate in masterclasses from experts. The event aims to highlight the garment’s significance and its role in Moroccan sartorial heritage.

Keep an eye out for more information on this year’s edition of Caftan Week as it unfolds.
