The mother-in-law of Sanjoy Roy, the arrested civic volunteer accused of raping and murdering a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar hospital in Kolkata, has cast doubt on her son-in-law’s capacity to commit the crime alone. Speaking to ANI, she described a tumultuous relationship with Roy, stating that their marriage was his second and that things turned sour within six months. She alleges that Roy caused her daughter’s miscarriage while she was three months pregnant, physically assaulting her. A police complaint was filed for the same incident.
The elderly woman expressed incredulity at the possibility of Roy acting alone, echoing the sentiments of the doctor’s parents and the BJP. She said, “Hang him or do whatever you want with him. I won’t speak about the crime. He could not have done it alone. He doesn’t have the capacity to do it alone…”
The case has sparked nationwide protests and prompted the Supreme Court to take suo motu cognizance of the incident. The court is set to hear the case as the first matter on Tuesday, August 20th.
Meanwhile, the Calcutta High Court has transferred the investigation from Kolkata Police to the CBI. Sanjoy Roy is scheduled to undergo a polygraph test conducted by the CBI on the same day.
The tragic incident occurred on August 9th when the body of the postgraduate trainee doctor, specializing in chest medicine, was discovered inside the seminar hall of the hospital’s chest department. She had sustained severe injury marks.
The case has sent shockwaves through the medical community, leading to a nationwide doctors’ strike demanding justice for the victim and improved safety measures in hospitals.
