In a surprising move, Motorola is stepping up its software support game. The company’s latest mid-range phone, the Motorola Edge 50 Neo, is set to receive five years of Android operating system updates and security patches. This is a notable change for Motorola, which typically offers three years of updates for its flagship models like the Motorola Edge 2024 and Motorola Razr Plus 2024.
This extended support puts Motorola in closer competition with industry giants like Samsung and Google, both of whom offer seven years of updates. While five years might not match their seven-year commitment, it’s a significant improvement for Motorola and a welcome change for customers. It shows a clear shift in Motorola’s strategy towards prioritizing long-term software support.
The Edge 50 Neo boasts a 6.4-inch display and is powered by a Dimensity 7300 chip. It will be launched in India on September 16th, following its European debut. The phone comes with either 8GB or 12GB of RAM, and 256GB or 512GB of storage. Other features include an LTPO OLED screen, a 4,310mAh battery, 68W wired charging, 15W wireless charging, and a robust camera system with a 50MP main camera, a 13MP ultrawide camera, a 10MP 3x telephoto lens, and a 32MP front-facing camera.
Motorola’s decision to extend software support for the Edge 50 Neo is a positive step, and one that hopefully sets a precedent for future Motorola models. It’s worth noting that while Motorola’s extended support is a positive development, the company’s phones still remain more affordable than those from Samsung and Google. The Motorola Edge 50 Neo retails for 499 euros, or about $551, in Europe. Indian pricing has not yet been announced.
