Gord Gillies, a former Global Calgary and CHQR radio anchor, has been presented with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Calgary’s Mount Royal University (MRU). Gillies is one of six prominent Albertans receiving the honor during the university’s spring convocation ceremonies next month.
MRU’s acting President, Dr. Chad London, highlighted that the university’s honorary Doctors of Laws are leaders who have given back to their communities. The university acknowledged Gillies’ contributions to news media, particularly his time as an anchor at Global News Calgary and host of CHQR News.
A Calgary native, Gillies pursued radio broadcasting at Toronto’s Humber College. He worked in various Canadian communities before returning to his hometown. Gillies spent 25 years at Global Calgary before joining 770 CHQR in 2017 to host The Morning News. He retired from broadcasting in 2019.
Gillies has a close connection to MRU. His wife, Kandi, worked in the university’s wellness services for many years, and his son, Liam, attended MRU until his passing in 2020.
In a news release, MRU described Gillies as an advocate for compassion towards individuals struggling with addiction and depression. He also encourages men experiencing deep grief to seek counseling.
Gillies expressed gratitude for the honor, stating that he is thrilled to be associated with an institution that has played a significant role in his life.
Alongside Gillies, five other notable Albertans will receive honorary Doctor of Laws degrees from MRU. They include Eleanor Chiu, Wayne Chiu, Charles Osuji, Roy Bear Chief, and The Honourable Ron Ghitter CM.
MRU’s convocation ceremonies will take place from June 12th to 14th.
