A recent poll involving 1,000 workers has revealed a concerning trend: 65% of employees experience a significant dip in productivity after lunch. The study, conducted by Emmi CAFFE LATTE, points to various factors contributing to this ‘afternoon slump,’ including prolonged desk work (35%), lengthy workdays (29%), heavy lunches (23%), inadequate sleep (27%), and the intensity of morning work (19%). A lack of physical activity (18%) and insufficient caffeine intake (14%) were also identified as contributing factors.
To combat the post-lunch drowsiness, many employees turn to strategies such as taking breaks (45%), stretching (27%), listening to music (23%), motivational podcasts (10%), caffeine (32%), and even power naps (13%). Recognizing this widespread phenomenon, Emmi CAFFE LATTE partnered with fitness icon Mr Motivator to bring a dose of energy and motivation to the workforce.
Donning his signature vibrant Lycra, the 71-year-old fitness legend, real name Derrick Evans, led a lively 15-minute exercise session for employees at Manchester’s Media City. Mr Motivator, known for his infectious enthusiasm and motivational messages, emphasized the importance of movement throughout the day.
“We start the day with the best intentions, but sitting behind a desk all day can be a real challenge. It’s super important to get moving whenever we can – big or small, every bit counts,” he said. “It’ll boost your health, your mood, and most importantly, your motivation. Office workers, you’re my perfect crowd for a pick-me-up, especially after lunch when that energy dip hits hardest.” He encouraged workers to “get up from that desk, shake it out with some easy stretches or a brisk walk outside in the fresh air – you’ll feel fantastic during and afterwards!”
The study, conducted via OnePoll.com, found that a large majority (63%) of respondents acknowledge the reality of the afternoon slump. Furthermore, 34% reported delaying unfinished work until the next day due to the dip, highlighting its impact on productivity.
A spokesperson for Emmi CAFFE LATTE stated: “Mr Motivator is the perfect person to inspire the nation. We’re eager to applaud the nation’s accomplishments, no matter how big or small, and this serotonin-boosting workout evidently helped people shake off their slump and complete their tasks. The research highlights how diet, lack of exercise, and poor sleep can affect the level of motivation people have during the workday, and we’re all too familiar with that afternoon dip. Typical ways to wake up from that slump include stepping away from the desk and having a quick stretch, but what better way to get moving than a visit from Mr Motivator himself.”
