Marks & Spencer (M&S) is set to axe a significant portion of its large furniture range as part of a major shake-up. According to The Sun, the high street retailer and supermarket chain will discontinue selling the majority of its own-brand furniture in the coming months. This decision includes bulky items such as beds, sofas, and wardrobes. The retailer will cease selling larger furniture items in the autumn, although an exact date is yet to be confirmed. Going forward, M&S will focus on collaborating with third-party brands to offer a wider selection of furniture products on its website. However, it has not disclosed which brands it will be partnering with. Currently, M&S stocks garden furniture from Kettler and Royalcrafty, but these items are only available online. It is understood that M&S will not be selling furniture from other brands in its physical stores. The retailer will continue to offer smaller furniture items, such as accent chairs, side tables, and coffee tables. M&S has stated that this change will allow them to concentrate on expanding their core product range. M&S initially introduced its furniture range in 1986, alongside the launch of its Home Furnishings catalogue. Currently, the retailer’s home range encompasses bed, bath, cook and dine, home accessories, and home fragrance products. Additionally, M&S will discontinue its “made to order” range, which allowed customers to customize the fabric and size of furniture pieces. The retailer will cease taking orders for this service on July 31. Until then, all furniture will continue to be sold with M&S’s 10-year guarantee. An M&S spokesperson told The Sun: “While we boast a fantastic assortment of home products, we aim to bring even more innovation, exceptional value, and stylish products to our customers’ homes. To achieve this, we will reduce the number of large, own-brand furniture items and expand our range of key pieces like accent chairs, side, and coffee tables; collaborating with third party brands to supplement our offerings.” This news follows a recent social media blunder by M&S, which accidentally featured a bottle of Aldi wine in one of its online furniture advertisements. The wine was prominently displayed in the listing for M&S’s Royalcraft Roma 4 Seater Garden Table & Chair set. Of course, Aldi’s social media team couldn’t resist the opportunity to take a playful jab at the retailer. The discount chain shared a cheeky post on social media, featuring the image of the advert with the caption: “Marks & Spencer drink Aldi wine, pass it on.” The post went viral, garnering over one million views and 14,000 likes. M&S responded to the blunder with a statement saying, “Sometimes you regret asking guests to BYOB.” The Mirror has reached out to M&S for further comment.
