MSC Cruises Unveils UK’s Pickiest Eaters: Birmingham Tops the List, Londoners Embrace Adventure

A recent study by MSC Cruises has delved into the captivating world of children’s eating habits across the UK, spotlighting intriguing differences between young diners in Birmingham and London. The findings reveal that Birmingham holds the title of having some of the nation’s fussiest eaters, while their London counterparts demonstrate adventurous palates.

This research, which surveyed 2,000 parents with children aged six to 16, provided a detailed analysis of picky and adventurous eating patterns across various UK cities. Birmingham emerged as the city with the highest proportion of selective eaters, closely followed by Newcastle and Leicester, where mealtime negotiations are a common occurrence. The study also highlighted that 37% of parents regularly face challenges at mealtime due to their children’s limited food preferences, with 83% finding these struggles even more pronounced when traveling abroad.

This is where MSC Cruises steps in with a tailored solution for families. MSC Virtuosa, one of the cruise line’s flagship vessels, boasts 10 diverse dining venues, ranging from elegant main restaurants to world-class specialty eateries. This wide variety ensures that even the most particular eaters can find dishes they enjoy, making dining onboard a stress-free experience for families.

To further assist parents in expanding their children’s culinary horizons, MSC Cruises not only offers a vast array of onboard dining choices but also designs shore excursions with a focus on food discovery. From pizza-making workshops in Italy to chocolate-tasting tours in the Caribbean, these excursions provide fun and interactive opportunities for children to explore new foods and flavors.

Additionally, MSC Cruises has developed an interactive map of the UK, showcasing the regions with the fussiest eaters and how these preferences influence family travel plans. This tool allows families to explore how different cities rank in terms of picky eating, providing valuable insights for planning their next holiday.

The research also unveiled that 22% of parents experience frustration when their children refuse to try new foods while on vacation, with 18% perplexed by their kids’ reactions to unfamiliar dishes. With 63% of parents acknowledging that food options are a significant factor in choosing travel destinations, it’s no surprise that 14% have considered canceling a trip due to concerns over limited culinary choices.

MSC Cruises’ commitment to catering to diverse tastes and providing enriching food experiences both onboard and ashore makes them a preferred choice for families seeking to avoid mealtime stress during their travels.

Antonio Paradiso, VP of International Sales and Managing Director of MSC Cruises UK and Ireland, commented: “From our research, it’s interesting to see what an important role food preferences and cuisine play in holiday habits and travel itineraries. It’s apparent that parents have their work cut out for them to keep their youngsters happy – whether that’s here at home or further afield. We’ve also observed that kids can be pickier on holiday as they can’t always access the food they can get at home, and this can have a real impact on family travel.”

“For parents, going somewhere they know they’ll have options can be a load off the mind. With a wide variety of restaurants on board our ships, ranging from international cuisine to relaxed buffet experiences, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. MSC Cruises offers parents the chance to truly unwind, leaving the cooking and meal planning to our experienced cruise chefs. We want parents and kids to be able to indulge in all their favourite food choices – and focus on creating memories together.”

To spark children’s interest in food, the South-West of England stands out as a region where getting kids involved in the kitchen from an early age is a popular approach. In cities like Bristol and Plymouth, 58% of parents opt to engage their children in cooking, hoping that hands-on experience will foster a love for trying new foods.

Meanwhile, in Liverpool, 45% of parents take a different route, using sweet treats or familiar favorites as a way to coax their kids into tasting something new. However, not all parents maintain their patience when it comes to mealtime battles. The study revealed that one in four parents admit to losing their temper when their children refuse to try a dish that they believe their kids would enjoy.

The research also included insights from the children themselves, with 54% admitting they’ve turned down new foods simply because they ‘looked weird,’ and nearly 59% confessing that they would happily eat pizza every day while on holiday if given the chance.

For families eager to explore new destinations without the added stress of finding suitable dining options, MSC Cruises offers a wide range of itineraries throughout the year. Whether it’s the sun-drenched Mediterranean, the breathtaking Norwegian fjords, or the exotic Caribbean islands, MSC Cruises allows guests to embark on a culinary journey that blends traditional favorites with exciting new flavors. With a diverse array of dining options, even the pickiest eaters are sure to find something they love, ensuring a stress-free vacation experience for the whole family.
