Multiple Buildings Evacuated Due to Gas Leak in Downtown Vancouver

On Wednesday morning, multiple buildings in downtown Vancouver were evacuated because of a gas leak, according to fire officials. Captain Matthew Trudeau, a public information officer with Vancouver Fire Rescue Services (VFRS), stated to CTV News that crews responded to a report of a gas leak on Alexander Street between Main and Cordova streets. Trudeau said that a high concentration of gas was detected inside one building, prompting the evacuation of that building, two adjacent ones, and another across the street, out of an abundance of caution. Several fire trucks were dispatched to the scene as a precaution against potential ignitions or explosions, but the response was gradually scaled back. VFRS collaborated with BC Hydro and Fortis BC to disconnect power and gas to the affected building, Trudeau said. The operation was completed, and occupants of the adjacent buildings were allowed to return shortly before 11 a.m.
