The newly opened southbound coastal road tunnel in Mumbai, which spans from Breach Candy to Marine Drive and stretches for approximately 3.5 kilometers, currently lacks adequate mobile connectivity and emergency access. Motorists are facing challenges in maintaining seamless communication during their 5-10 minute journey through the tunnel, and emergency services are also inaccessible during this period. This has raised concerns among the city’s telecom department, which has brought the issue to the attention of the BMC commissioner.
The Mumbai Coastal Road project officials have acknowledged the issue and confirmed that the process for installing antennas inside the tunnel is already underway, with the aim of completing the work by May 15. The antennas will be set up in the tunnel’s cross passages and are expected to provide improved mobile connectivity and emergency access for both motorists and maintenance staff.
The entire Mumbai Coastal Road project is slated for completion by June, with 87% of the work already finished. Once completed, it is anticipated to significantly improve connectivity and traffic flow along the city’s coastal areas.
