Mumbai Customs arrests man with 2.22 kg gold worth Rs 1.45 crore at airport

The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Mumbai Customs arrested a 49-year-old man, Jayesh Shah, at the Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Tuesday morning. The arrest was made based on suspicion of smuggling after intercepting Shah. Upon checking, small gold bars were found concealed under the clothes he was wearing.

The AIU officials recovered gold bars weighing around 2.22 kg from Shah, a Dombivli resident. The seized gold is worth approximately Rs 1.45 crore. Shah was subsequently arrested under relevant sections of the Customs Act.

During questioning, Shah admitted to smuggling gold from Malaysia to India. Officials are investigating to gather information about his associates and to determine if he has a history of gold smuggling.

The Mumbai airport customs recently reported the seizure of over 6.815 kg of gold valued at Rs 4.44 crore and diamonds valued at Rs 2.02 crore between April 19 and 21 in 13 cases.
