Mumbai Faces Water Cuts to Conserve Supply

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to implement water cuts in Mumbai to ensure adequate supply until monsoon rains arrive. A 5% water cut will be implemented from Thursday, May 30, and a 10% water cut from Wednesday, June 5. This precautionary measure aims to conserve water stocks as much as possible.

Currently, the dams supplying water to Mumbai hold a total of 1,40,202 million liters. However, as of May 25, only 9.69% of the water stock is available, against the annual requirement of 14,47,363 million liters.

The BMC administration is closely monitoring the water stock and supplying water to Mumbaikars in a planned manner every day. The water cuts will remain in force until satisfactory rainfall is received and the useful stock in the water bodies improves.

The BMC appeals to all citizens to use water judiciously and adopt water-saving measures. This cooperation will help the municipal administration’s efforts to conserve water and ensure an adequate supply for all.

Earlier media reports, citing IMD officials, predicted the monsoon rains would likely begin in Mumbai on June 10. While no official statement about the monsoon’s entry in Mumbai has been released, the near-normal onset in Kerala and the absence of anticipated cyclones over the Arabian Sea or the Bay of Bengal create a favorable situation for a timely beginning of monsoon showers in Mumbai.
