Mumbai Flooded: Gateway of India Submerged Amid Heavy Rains

Mumbai woke up to a second consecutive day of heavy rainfall on Monday, prompting widespread concern as a video of the flooded Gateway of India went viral on social media. The past 12 hours saw monsoon showers cause waterlogging and disrupt traffic throughout the city. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a forecast predicting “moderate to heavy rain in the city and suburbs” for the next 24 hours, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The viral video, which shows powerful waves crashing on the historical monument in Mumbai, with everything around it submerged in water, raised concerns about the severity of the situation. However, its time or location cannot be independently verified by LiveMint. The authenticity of the video is therefore questionable.

Netizens expressed their concern for the residents of Mumbai in the comments section of the video, urging them to stay safe amidst the heavy rains and strong winds. Some users commented on the scary nature of the situation and highlighted climate change as a serious concern.

Despite the viral video, one user flagged it as an old one, urging others to avoid spreading panic.

The intense rain brought heavy rainfall to several locations in Mumbai, with over 200 mm of rainfall recorded in the 24 hours leading up to 8 AM on Monday. This heavy rain briefly disrupted local train services during the morning rush hour between Kalyan and Thakurli stations, causing delays. Some areas experienced up to 34 mm of rainfall in just one hour between 6 AM and 7 AM.

The civic body confirmed that its Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) across the city recorded more than 200 mm of rainfall at multiple locations in the last 24 hours ending at 8 AM.

In anticipation of a high tide and continued moderate to heavy rains, authorities have deployed three teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) in Mumbai to manage any potential emergencies.
