Mumbai Indians’ Struggles Highlight Hardik Pandya’s Underwhelming Captaincy

Mumbai Indians’ abysmal IPL 2024 campaign has raised questions about Hardik Pandya’s leadership abilities. Despite being appointed captain after Rohit Sharma’s departure, Pandya has faced criticism from fans and reports of dressing room disquiet have surfaced. The Indian all-rounder has also struggled on the field, failing to score a single half-century in 13 matches and contributing only 11 wickets with the ball, highlighting his below-par performance.

AB de Villiers, in an analysis of Pandya’s captaincy, expressed concerns about its lack of authenticity, suggesting it may not be effective in leading experienced players such as Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah. De Villiers explained that these senior players might prefer a more composed and collective leadership style, rather than the ‘bravado’ and ‘ego-driven’ approach Pandya has displayed.

The former South African batter cited his experience playing under Graeme Smith, who successfully led a young Proteas team with a more understated approach. De Villiers believes that Pandya’s leadership style, which worked well with the younger players at Gujarat Titans, may not translate as effectively when leading a team with seasoned campaigners who demand a different approach.

Mumbai Indians will play their final match of the season against Lucknow Super Giants on May 17, with little to play for except pride. The franchise will hope to end their disappointing campaign on a positive note and reflect on the lessons learned this season.
