In the wake of a severe dust storm and heavy rainfall that swept across Mumbai yesterday, independent weather forecaster Mumbai Nowcast has issued a thunderstorm alert for today. The alert encompasses central Mumbai as well as the surrounding areas of Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, and Badlapur. According to Mumbai Nowcast, conditions are favorable for substantial thunderstorm activity in these regions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD), the country’s nodal weather forecasting agency, has not issued any new updates on Mumbai’s rainfall; however, it has predicted a wet spell and precipitation until May 18. IMD anticipates isolated heavy rainfall, accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, to persist over southern Peninsular India until May 18, 2024. Furthermore, a wet spell with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is expected to continue over central and eastern India today, gradually diminishing afterward. Earlier, the weather department issued a ‘Yellow’ alert for the Thane and Raigad districts, warning residents of thunderstorms and winds ranging from 30 to 40 kilometers per hour. Rainfall began in various parts of Mumbai yesterday and is expected to continue today. The death toll from the Mumbai hoarding collapse has now risen to 14, making it one of the most tragic incidents this year. A massive billboard collapsed in the Ghatkopar area of Mumbai on Monday amidst strong dust storms and heavy rain. The Mumbai Police have registered a case against Bhavesh Bhide, director of Ego Media, the company that installed the hoarding. Following this tragedy, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has resolved to remove illegal hoardings from various locations in the city. Additionally, BMC has issued a notice to Ego Media, ordering the immediate removal of its remaining hoardings throughout Mumbai.
