Mumbai’s century-old Sion Bridge, one of the most recognizable landmarks of the financial capital, is set to be demolished. This decision, announced by authorities, comes as a response to recent bridge collapse incidents in India, including those in Kerala’s Wayanad and Bihar following heavy rains. To ensure public safety and facilitate the construction of a new modern bridge, the Sion Road Over Bridge (ROB) will be closed to traffic from August 1, 2024, until July 31, 2026.
During this period, the Central Railway, in coordination with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), will undertake the dismantling and reconstruction of the existing bridge. The new bridge, designed with modern engineering standards, promises improved structural integrity and safety.
To manage the impact of the bridge closure on traffic flow, Mumbai Traffic Police has implemented specific traffic restrictions and diversions. The police department shared details on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), outlining the affected routes and alternative pathways for vehicles.
The closure will impact traffic from the Matunga traffic division and Dr. B.A. Road heading westbound towards L.B.S. Road or Sant Rohidas Road. Additionally, traffic from the Kurla traffic division on L.B.S. Road or Sant Rohidas Road heading eastbound towards Dr. B.A. Road will be diverted.
The Mumbai Traffic Police urges commuters to carefully review the official traffic advisory for detailed information on the new traffic arrangements and plan their routes accordingly to avoid delays and disruptions. The demolition and reconstruction of the Sion Bridge represents a significant infrastructure project for Mumbai, aiming to enhance safety and modernize a crucial transportation artery within the city.
