Munich Airport Electrifies Ground Operations with New Battery-Powered eGPUs, Accelerating ‘Net Zero 2035’ Goal

Munich Airport is significantly accelerating its ambitious ‘Net Zero 2035’ sustainability initiative with the introduction of groundbreaking technology. The airport recently launched two innovative battery-operated Ground Power Units (eGPUs), marking a pivotal step towards dramatically reducing its carbon footprint. These eGPUs, operated by AeroGround – a wholly-owned subsidiary of Munich Airport – provide power to aircraft parked away from gates, eliminating the need for kerosene-guzzling auxiliary power units (APUs) during downtime. This crucial change translates to a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions.

By December 2024, Munich Airport plans to deploy a total of 20 eGPUs. This expansion will prevent the release of approximately 8,000 tonnes of CO2 annually – a considerable contribution to the airport’s overall ‘Net Zero’ goal. This overarching initiative aims for a remarkable 90% reduction in CO2 emissions, with any remaining emissions offset through meticulously planned environmental projects. The commitment to sustainability extends beyond the eGPUs; the airport is also investing heavily in a fleet of emission-free electric passenger buses. Currently, ten of these eco-friendly buses are in operation, with a further 27 scheduled to join the fleet before the year’s end, significantly reducing transportation-related emissions.

The initiative underscores Munich Airport’s dedication to transitioning away from fossil fuels and embracing cleaner alternatives. This proactive approach isn’t just environmentally responsible; it also showcases the airport’s forward-thinking leadership in the aviation industry. The procurement of these advanced, environmentally friendly power generators received a significant boost through a EUR 5.6 million grant from the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport. This funding, part of a larger program supporting alternative technologies in airport ground power, is being jointly administered by Flughafen München GmbH and AeroGround, under the guidance of NOW GmbH and with approval from the Federal Office of Administration.

The successful implementation of this project solidifies Munich Airport’s position as a leader in sustainable aviation practices. The combination of eGPUs and electric buses, coupled with the airport’s broader ‘Net Zero 2035’ strategy, demonstrates a concrete commitment to environmental responsibility and sets a powerful example for other airports worldwide to follow. The airport’s proactive approach is not only mitigating climate change but also contributes to cleaner air and a more sustainable future for the region and the aviation industry as a whole.
