The Bollywood movie Munjya, directed by Aditya Sarpotdar and produced by Maddock Films, has achieved significant success at the box office. Released in theaters on June 7, 2024, the horror-comedy featuring a star-studded cast including Sharvari Wagh, Abhay Verma, Mona Singh, and Sathyaraj, garnered ₹ 23 crore in its first four days. The movie’s collection has continued to grow, reaching a total of ₹ 101.6 crore.
Munjya’s success follows the pattern of another horror-comedy, Bhediya, also produced by Maddock Films. Starring Varun Dhawan, Kriti Sanon, and Abhishek Banerjee, Bhediya exceeded ₹ 100 crore at the box office. Munjya’s producer-director, Dhawan, had even encouraged fans to watch the post-credit scene, teasing a connection to Bhediya.
Munjya, which translates to Upanayana (sacred thread) in Marathi, delves into the belief that spirits of boys who underwent this ceremony haunt peepal trees. This belief is rooted in the idea that these spirits dwell near peepal trees or wells, causing fear in those who venture near them at night.
The film’s OTT release is scheduled for August or September 2024 on Disney+ Hotstar. This will allow Bollywood fans to experience the thrilling blend of fear and humor offered by Munjya from the comfort of their homes.
