IT industry veterans N R Narayana Murthy and Kris Gopalakrishnan have outlined their expectations for the incoming government, emphasizing the need for supportive policies for honest entrepreneurs and increased investment in research and education.
In an interview with the Economic Times, Murthy expressed his desire for the new government to adopt ‘compassionate capitalism,’ arguing that neither socialist nor communist systems have yielded satisfactory outcomes in the past. He stressed the importance of providing ample opportunities for ethical entrepreneurs, enabling them to create wealth and employment for the nation. Conversely, those who violate regulations should face appropriate consequences.
Both Murthy and Gopalakrishnan emphasized the crucial role of research and higher education in driving innovation and economic growth. They advocated for increased funding for research institutions, both from private and public sectors. Gopalakrishnan drew attention to the substantial endowments received by prestigious universities in the United States and expressed his hope that Indian alumni would contribute more to their former institutions.
Murthy concurred with Gopalakrishnan, recognizing the need for reforms in academic institutions while acknowledging the significant innovation already occurring in the corporate world. He suggested that the government could facilitate this process by incentivizing young entrepreneurs to share their ideas and innovations. This would not only foster collaboration but also provide financial support to educational institutions through dividends generated by successful ventures.
Murthy envisions a future where educational institutions adapt to emerging trends and embrace technological advancements. He urged them to consider the long-term implications of their decisions and invest in areas that will sustain their relevance and impact in the coming decades.
