Australia has achieved a significant milestone in maritime history with the discovery of the MV Noongah shipwreck, 55 years after it sank off the coast of New South Wales, resulting in the loss of 21 lives. The 71m (233ft) freighter, carrying steel, encountered stormy weather in 1969, triggering one of Australia’s largest maritime search operations. While initial rescue efforts saved five of the 26 crew members, the fate of the others remained unknown for decades, with only one body ever recovered.
The mystery surrounding the MV Noongah’s final moments has finally been unveiled. Australia’s science agency, utilizing advanced seafloor mapping and video technology, confirmed the wreck’s location after years of uncertainty. The vessel, succumbing to heavy seas, sank shortly after issuing a distress signal on August 25, 1969. The shipwreck, discovered intact and upright 170m below the surface near South West Rocks, perfectly matches the known dimensions of the MV Noongah. While local reports had hinted at its existence, technological limitations previously hindered confirmation.
The discovery by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) has brought much-needed closure to surviving family members who have endured years of uncertainty. Plans are underway for a dive to gather additional footage from the site under the Sydney Project, aimed at documenting lost shipwrecks and uncovering the circumstances surrounding their sinking. The tragedy remains a painful memory for many in the community, and the discovery of the vessel’s resting place offers a sense of closure for all.
Pamela Hendy, widow of Captain Leo Botsman, expressed her relief, stating, “It’s always been in the back of my mind.” The discovery was made by the RV Investigator, operated by CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, as part of the Marine National Facility. Known for its expertise in maritime investigations, the RV Investigator has covered over 500,000 kilometers and surveyed more than 3 million square kilometers of Australia’s marine territory over the last decade.
