The devastating impact of Typhoon Yagi and seasonal monsoon rains in Myanmar continues to unfold, with the death toll from floods and landslides reaching at least 226. An additional 77 people remain missing, according to state-run media reports. This grim figure represents a substantial increase from the initial death toll of 33 reported on Friday, with strong indications that the number will continue to rise.
The slow pace of casualty counting has been attributed to communication difficulties in affected areas, which are grappling with the challenges of ongoing civil war. Typhoon Yagi previously struck Vietnam, northern Thailand, and Laos, leaving a trail of destruction and loss of life. The storm claimed the lives of nearly 300 people in Vietnam, 42 in Thailand, and four in Laos, as reported by the ASEAN Coordinating Center for Humanitarian Assistance.
