Nagpur Shivers as Maximum Temperature Drops to 33 Degrees Celsius, Trees Uprooted

Nagpur returned to unusually chilly weather on Monday as cool winds and rain brought down the city’s maximum temperature to 33 degrees Celsius, a sharp 8.3 degrees below normal. This marks the second such occurrence in the last 15 days, following a similar drop on April 7th.

The gusty winds also caused some trees to be uprooted, requiring the intervention of firefighters. At 26 degrees Celsius, Gondia recorded the lowest maximum temperature in Maharashtra, surpassing even the hill station town of Mahabaleshwar, which registered a warmer 31.5 degrees Celsius. On April 7th, Nagpur’s maximum temperature had also dipped below Mahabaleshwar’s.

While the eastern end of Vidarbha faced low temperatures, the western part, including Washim, experienced sizzling heat, with temperatures reaching 42.2 degrees Celsius, 3 degrees above normal. Several districts in Vidarbha received rainfall, with Gondia recording the highest amount at 10mm, followed by Nagpur with 3mm and Amravati with 1mm.

Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds were also reported in isolated areas, including Yavatmal, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Bhandara, Gondia, Nagpur, and Wardha. Light to moderate rainfall occurred in many places over Chandrapur, a few places over Gadchiroli, and isolated areas over Gondia, Bhandara, Yavatmal, Wardha, and Nagpur districts.

Firefighters from Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s fire and emergency services department responded to at least four calls related to tree felling in different parts of the city, including one at a house in Adarsh Colony, Trimurti Nagar. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in any of these incidents. The first tree was uprooted in the state government’s housing colony near Ambazari police station. There, firefighters also rescued a cow that had fallen into a nullah. Another tree fell on busy Central Avenue near Dalvi Hospital at Telephone Exchange Square, which was promptly removed by firefighters. Similar calls were attended to in Adarsh Nagar, where a large tree fell over a house. Firefighters from Trimurti Nagar fire station swiftly responded to this incident. Firefighters from the Civil Lines station removed another uprooted tree between Rahate Colony Road and ITI on Deekshabhoomi Road on Monday evening.
