Naima Khatoon Breaks Barriers: First Woman Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University

Dr. Naima Khatoon, a distinguished psychologist with a PhD from AMU, has taken the helm of the university as its Vice Chancellor for the next five years, with the approval of President Droupadi Murmu and the Election Commission of India. Prior to this appointment, she served as a lecturer in the Department of Psychology since 1988 and was elevated to professorship in 2006. In 2014, she became the Principal of the Women’s College within AMU.

Founded in 1875, AMU holds a prominent place among India’s oldest universities. Despite its long history, it has never had a female Vice Chancellor until now. Dr. Khatoon’s appointment marks a significant milestone in the university’s journey towards gender equality.

In the past, AMU has also witnessed the leadership of a woman at its highest level with the appointment of Begum Sultan Jahan as its chancellor in 1920, making her the only woman to have held the position to date.
