Nakamichi’s Dragon Dolby Atmos soundbar is already known for its impressive performance, boasting a hefty price tag of $3,900 and a 3,000-watt, 11.4.6-channel setup. Now, the company is pushing the limits even further with the introduction of a new 12-inch, 750-watt subwoofer. This massive addition can be integrated into existing Dragon systems as an upgrade for $1,500 or purchased alongside the soundbar with up to four units for a staggering $8,500, resulting in a total system wattage of 5,000.
Nakamichi claims the development of this powerful subwoofer was driven directly by customer feedback. Their survey revealed that 41% of Dragon owners desire three or more subwoofers, with a preference for 12-inch or larger drivers in 67% of respondents. “Dragon owners crave bass intensity that matches the benchmarks set by dedicated high-end home theater setups,” stated Nakamichi USA CEO Rayman Cheng in a press release. “This fueled our determination to develop a 12-inch subwoofer that would push Dragon beyond the perceived limitations of plug-and-play home entertainment.”
This 80-pound beast packs a punch with its 750 watts of power, a front-firing 12-inch carbon-reinforced aluminum driver, and a down-firing 12-inch passive carbon-infused bass radiator. Nakamichi promises an experience that will “release cataclysmic rumbles with thundering subsonic energy, unlocking a new dimension to your favorite content.”
While the existing Dragon already utilizes dual 8-inch subwoofers, some reviewers have suggested that the system could benefit from even more low-end power. The addition of these new 12-inch units might significantly impact the overall sound quality, especially for frequencies that are typically sent to subwoofers. It’s an intriguing prospect, considering the potential for generating a truly overwhelming bass experience with four of these subwoofers.
The standard Dragon system boasts a claimed frequency response of 20Hz-40kHz. However, the 12-inch subwoofers reportedly push the low-end down to 19Hz, entering the realm of frequencies that are felt rather than heard. If you have the budget, the space, and a considerate neighbor, Nakamichi will start accepting orders for the new systems and individual subwoofers later this month.
