In a thrilling display of nerves and skill, India’s Natasha Chethan emerged victorious at the IBSF World Under-21 Women’s Snooker Championship, held in Karnataka State Billiards Association (KSBA) on Wednesday. Chethan, competing on home turf, secured her maiden world title after a hard-fought final against Thailand’s Narucha Phoemphul. The match was a tense affair, characterized by lengthy safety exchanges and a somewhat subdued attacking approach from both players.
The deciding fifth frame saw Chethan take a five-point lead by potting the brown and blue balls. However, she missed a crucial double on the pink, giving Phoemphul a glimmer of hope. Narucha, unfortunately, failed to capitalize on the opportunity, missing a straightforward pot on the pink, which led to her dropping to the ground in despair. Chethan, seizing the moment, returned to the table and calmly concluded the match, securing the championship title.
Speaking on the dramatic finish, Chethan expressed her relief and gratitude, stating, “I prayed to all the Gods, and my prayers were answered.” The final, a slow-burning affair spanning three hours and 40 minutes, saw both players hesitant to unleash their full attacking potential. The emphasis was on safety play, leading to a match focused on tactical maneuvering rather than dynamic break building.
Phoemphul, despite a strong start with a 31-break in the first frame, ultimately couldn’t maintain her early momentum. The championship victory marks a significant milestone for Chethan, who has now etched her name in the annals of the IBSF World Under-21 Women’s Snooker Championship.
