The National Conference, a prominent political party in Jammu and Kashmir, unveiled its manifesto for the upcoming assembly elections on Monday in Srinagar. The manifesto, presented by party vice-president Omar Abdullah, outlines a comprehensive set of promises aimed at addressing key concerns within the region.
One of the most significant pledges is the restoration of Article 370 and 35A, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir before their abrogation by the Indian government in 2019. The manifesto also promises the repeal of the Public Safety Act (PSA), a controversial law that allows for preventive detention without trial. Additionally, the party has committed to the release of political prisoners currently incarcerated in the region.
In an effort to boost the local economy and create employment opportunities, the National Conference has pledged to generate one lakh jobs. Other key promises include six free gas cylinders for households in the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category, free travel for women in public transport, and a commitment to the dignified return of Kashmiri Pandits who fled the region during the 1990s. The manifesto also emphasizes the need for ease of passport issuance and the prevention of unnecessary harassment of people on highways.
The party’s manifesto also focuses on improving the relationship between India and Pakistan. The National Conference has promised to work towards the restoration of dialogue between the two countries.
The three-phase elections to the 90-member Jammu and Kashmir Assembly will be held on September 18, September 25, and October 1. The results will be declared on October 4. The National Conference’s manifesto is expected to play a significant role in shaping the upcoming elections and influencing the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir.
