National Press Club Briefing on Status of Imprisoned U.S. Journalists

The National Press Club will host a news briefing on the status of imprisoned U.S. journalists Austin Tice and Evan Gershkovich.

Austin Tice, a Polk Award-winning journalist who worked for McClatchy and the Washington Post, was detained in Syria in 2012. The U.S. has recently held direct talks with Syria about issues including Austin’s safe return.

Evan Gershkovich was reporting for the Wall Street Journal when he was unjustly detained by Russian security forces. He has been held more than a year without trial. He is charged with espionage, which is vehemently denied by his employer and his government.

The briefing will be held at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. on August 11, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. ET. The event is open to all credentialed press and members of the National Press Club. Registration is required.

The event will also be livestreamed on the NPC YouTube channel.

Speakers will include:

* Kathy Kiely, School of Journalism, Press Freedom Consultant, National Press Club
* Rezaian, of the Washington Post
* Beckett, of the Wall Street Journal
* Emily Wilkins, President, National Press Club

The Club will also post a video interview with Pavel Butorin, husband of Alsu Kurmasheva, an editor for RFE/RL who is currently held in Russia.
