National Sports Day in India is an annual celebration held on August 29th, commemorating the birth anniversary of the legendary hockey player, Major Dhyan Chand. This day, first recognized as a celebratory day in 2012, is a tribute to the unparalleled skills and achievements of this sporting icon.
Dhyan Chand’s name is synonymous with excellence in the world of hockey. His exceptional ball control, astonishing goal-scoring ability, and unmatched wizardry on the field earned him the moniker ‘The Wizard.’ He was instrumental in India’s dominance in the sport, leading the national team to victory in the 1928, 1932, and 1936 Summer Olympics. His contributions to Indian hockey during the pre-independence period solidified his status as a national hero.
Born in Allahabad (now Prayagraj), Uttar Pradesh, on August 29, 1905, Dhyan Chand’s career spanned from 1926 to 1948. He retired after a remarkable journey, playing 185 matches for India and scoring over 400 goals. His legacy continued even after retirement; he served as a Major in the Indian Army’s Punjab Regiment until 1956. In the same year, the Indian government bestowed upon him the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award, recognizing his invaluable contributions to the nation.
To honor the legend’s memory, National Sports Day is observed on his birthday. The day is also marked by the conferring of National Sports Awards, recognizing outstanding achievements in various sports disciplines. The highest sporting honor, the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna (formerly known as Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna), is awarded on this day.
National Sports Day 2024 will be held on Thursday, August 29th, providing an opportunity for the nation to reflect on the legacy of Major Dhyan Chand and celebrate the spirit of sportsmanship and excellence.
