NCW Seeks Action Against User for ‘Lewd’ Comment on Captain Anshuman Singh’s Widow

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken a strong stance against a user who allegedly made a ‘lewd’ comment about Smriti, the widow of Kirti Chakra awardee Captain Anshuman Singh. Following widespread outrage on social media, the NCW wrote to Delhi Police urging immediate action.

The NCW highlighted that the objectionable comment by K. Ahmad, posted under a photo of Smriti Singh at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, violated Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000. Smriti had received the Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest gallantry award, from President Droupadi Murmu, on behalf of her late husband. Captain Anshuman Singh, a brave soldier, was martyred while attempting to rescue his fellow soldier at an Indian Army camp in the Siachen glacier.

The NCW strongly condemned the behavior and demanded prompt action from the Delhi Police. In a letter to the Delhi Commissioner of Police, NCW Chairperson Ms. Rekha Sharma requested the arrest of the accused and a detailed report within three days. The NCW’s official X account posted, “NCW condemns this behaviour and urges immediate police action. Hon’ble Chairperson Ms Rekha Sharma has sent a letter to Delhi commissioner of Police to arrest the accused and send A detailed report within 3 days.”

Captain Anshuman Singh, a medical officer with the 26 Punjab Regiment in the Siachen Glacier region, was part of Operation Meghdoot. On July 19, 2023, a fire broke out in an Indian Army ammunition dump due to a short circuit. Witnessing the fire engulfing a nearby medical investigation room, Captain Singh bravely responded. He managed to save four to five individuals before getting trapped in the hut and succumbing to the fire. He was laid to rest with full state honors in Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria on July 22, 2023. Just two months before his martyrdom, Singh had been posted to Siachen after his marriage to Smriti.
