The Government of India has formed a committee to analyze the issue of irregularities in the recently concluded National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2024. The panel will examine whether to hold the exam again or not. K Sanjay Murthy, Secretary, Department of Higher Education, addressed a press conference in the national capital to clarify the controversies surrounding the alleged paper leak and irregularities in the NEET UG 2024 examination.
Murthy emphasized the integrity of the medical entrance exam and the fair procedures followed in its administration. He acknowledged that only one question was challenged this year, the lowest in NEET history. However, revised marks of many students remained negative even after compensation, indicating that adjustments made no significant difference in the overall results.
Addressing concerns about a possible re-examination, Murthy stated that the committee would analyze the irregularities. He noted that only 1,600 candidates in six centers were affected out of nearly 23 lakh students who appeared for the exam. A decision on a re-exam would be taken after reviewing the findings of the Grievance Redressal Committee.
Meanwhile, NTA Director General Subodh Kumar Singh acknowledged that grace marks awarded to over 1,500 candidates might be revised. He stated that a panel headed by a former UPSC chairman would submit its recommendations within a week, potentially leading to changes in the results of these candidates.
The NTA Director General emphasized the transparency of the examination process, stating that issues were limited to six centers out of 4,750. He asserted that the integrity of the exam was not compromised nationwide.
Aspirants of the medical entrance exam have alleged inflation of marks, leading to a record number of candidates securing the top rank. The test was conducted on May 5, with the provisional answer key released on May 29 and the final answer key on June 4.
